Journal Resources (aka, what the shite happened and what can we do to help ourselves?)
Since I've been collecting this round up of links primarily for my own reference, I thought I'd post it for others to use as well.
Posted below are links mostly to journal backup and/or migration resources, ways of keeping in touch with people should things really shatter apart, tips and links to help in using other journals, and some basic 'what happened where' links at the bottom to help sort out what actually went down.
Let me just say, right off, I'm not planning on moving at this stage. However, since I have no idea what LJ/6A will do about adult content in the future, I figure it's better to pick up these things while they're in my face than to have to go looking later should things go pear shaped.
Anyway, enough of my rambling. On to the round up. Have at it guys!
Stewardess on IJ posted instructions on how to combine all your friends onto the one flist, from mutliple journal hosts, as well as Pros & Cons of RSS feeds for flist.
If you do follow this idea, please check out the pros & cons section first, as it's got some very important additional information about how RSS feeds work for this kind of thing. It seems like there's a lot of pros and cons to this one, but it might be a temporary solution for anyone who's concerned about keeping track of people.
Update 3: Aithine on LJ also has an excellent tutorial on reading multiple friends lists using FeedReader 3 (complete with screen caps!)
Elke-tanzer on LJ has more links on backing up and migration here. Especially check out the link to screen-capped instructions on using LJ Archive at the bottom of the post.
Snapetoy has a post on GJ on how to post to multiple journals in Semagic, with a clarification comment here. The second post includes a screen cap to help. (I've done this and, using the info from both posts, it's remarkably easy.)
Update 3: Cmshaw on LJ, on how to use the OpenID option to comment in LJ clones, instead of creating multiple journals.
Brown-Betty's post on LJ on backing up your journals to alternative journal hosts. Also includes a link that might assist Mac users in backing up. Update 4: Apparently this one works very well, and can also be used for Windows (if python is installed). (note that Quill refrained from inappropriate python comment ^_^) Wistfuljaneon LJ adds more information in this comment, about using ljArchive's export feature and WordPress' import feature to also make a complete backup.
Update 4: Liz-Marcs on LJ also has an excellent post here on lj backup and migration tools. and another very good comparison of journals here. (Thank you mllesatine for pointing that one out to me)
Update 4: Morgan Dawn on LJ also has some excellent resources included in her LJ tools tag (including blog clients for Mac users).
Discussions are being held on setting up a fandom friendly/purpose built journal on
fandom_flies (on LJ) . So far, I've been really impressed with their ideas. Check it out for yourselves, and see what you think.
leavin_eljay (on LJ) currently has posts to arrange invites to Journalfen
Shaggirl on LJ has a comprehensive journal pros & cons comparison here, and djinanna at IJ as another set here. One users very valid concerns re: Greatest Journal are discussed here,
There's info here on LJ layouts for Greatest Journal.
And useful links and tips for Insane Journal here.
Elke-tanzer from above also recommends checking out:
Fanworks Finder
Fan History
and Directorium.org (a wiki based fannish directory.) Having had a very quick look around, I'd really encourage anyone involved in any kind of fandom to do this, regardless of what else happens, simply because it's an excellent setup for looking for fandom info, links, webpages, fics, etc.
Elke-tanzer also suggests that you enter your data into the Fandom411.com relocation tool. You can also do a search for a username you know to see if they've listed their information. This one is really easy to work with.
Update 3: You can also register any alternative journals you have at
beyond_lj (on LJ), and there's also a long standing comm for letting people know if you're
deleting_my_lj (on LJ).
For those interested in what actually happened:
Imaginarycircus on LJ posted a brief and clear synopsis of initial events in
innocence_jihad (on LJ).
There's general info roundup on Fandom_TOSsed at GJ and
innocence_jihad
Aura218 on LJ has collected all of the 'official' statements (ie, replies made by LJ staffers in
lj_biz) of Which mod said what... in the comment flood after LJ's clarification post at lj_biz, here.
Jupiter-star on LJ has outlined a list of LJ's various contradictions & links to legality discussions/info.
A
fandom_action (on LJ) comm is available for discussions "...strictly about the legal protections for fans and for getting protections in place." (quote from mod's introduction post)
Meanwhile,
6a_conference (on LJ) has been set up to try and actively resolve these issue with Six Apart.
Bubble-blunder on LJ has an extremely concise and comprehensive roundup of more links.
Elke-tanzer (from above) has a pile load of extremely useful links over here. (as well as a lot of links to what happened where and when and to whom.)
